How to Create Ocean Cells Using Resin
Resin is a two-component-system consisting of resin and hardener. The mixing of both components produces a chemical reaction that causes the liquid resin to harden into a plastic!
After curing, a clear, high-gloss surface can be created with stunning details!
Are you ready to make waves?!
Resin waves is a project that always turns out to look amazing. You can use this technique on just about anything! From wood-boards, charcuterie boards to countertops, the possibilities are endless!
It’s a technique that involves initially pouring layers of resin in various shades of blue, then finishing with a layer of white and clear resin that gets pushed around with a heat gun to create a lacing effect reminiscent of sea foam. Resin is essential to creating realistic ocean art. It's clarity, consistency and gloss replicate the look of water in a way you simply can't get with any other medium.
Layering various shades of tinted resin creates a feeling of motion and depth: beautiful, deep ocean blues contrast with white wave crests against a sandy shore. Plus, the irresistibly smooth and glossy finish makes you want to dive right in.
There are several factors that come into play when trying to achieve cells and lacing. One of which is the type of resin you are using. The consistency of the resin is one key factor, too thick and the resin is difficult to move, too thin and you can lose the cells you have created.
In order to create cells you have to use pigments with different densities. By using ‘heavy’ pigments on top of ‘light’ pigments, the heavy pigments will want to sink downwards. This movement helps to create a cellular effect. The tough part here is knowing which pigments are dense and heavy and which are not. In general, it’s something you have to learn with your experience of using different colors and brands of colours.
The second factor is the use of a heat gun. This tool is brilliant for not only getting rid of bubbles in the resin, but also for pushing resin around the surface. Combine this with any of the methods above, and you can create even more cells in your resin. Make sure you do not over do it however!
